Filed under: Technology , Google , Sprint Nextel Corp. , Apple , AT&T , Verizon Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has been a leader in nailing Apple ( AAPL ) news and trends ahead of the Wall Street pack. On Monday, he sent a note to clients stating that Apple will likely be selling its iPhone on other carriers in the U.S. sometime next year, as reported by TUAW . I think Apple eventually will undertake such a program, but next year seems highly unlikely. For starters, if Apple abandons AT&T ( T ), it will likely get a smaller cut of revenues and sharing. Exclusivity has a price, and Apple will pay to do business with others. Filed under: Company News , Technology , Economy , Wal-Mart Stores Wal-Mart Stores ( WMT ), the bargain retailer known for its massive big-box stores, is using its heft to boost online sales to better compete with the likes of Amazon.com ( AMZN ) and eBay. Wal-Mart announced on Monday that it has begun selling one million more items through its website, walmart.com . Wal-mart Marketplace offers products in categories such as sporting goods, apparel, baby, home, luggage and toys. Among the retailers included are CSN Stores , ebags and ProTeam , with more to be added. The move will give Wal-Mart better footing to compete with Amazon.com and Apple ( AAPL ), which, according to analysts, has displaced Wal-Mart as the largest seller of music. Filed under: Economy Though the S&P 500 posted its sixth straight monthly gain in August, happy days are not here again. Unemployment is expected to top 10 percent before the end of the year. Commercial real estate markets may be the next thing to implode the balance sheets of the nation’s financial institutions. Cash for Clunkers boosted the automotive industry prompting the Big Three and its competitors to do something unthinkable even a few months ago — recall laid off workers and increase production. Filed under: Technology , Nokia , Qualcomm , Sony , Apple , Hitachi , Ericsson , China Unicom , China Mobile , Kyocera For smaller companies trying to plant a stake in the ground of larger, more established companies, one strategy is simply to team up. That’s what three small well-known players in mobile phones could soon announce in Japan, as NEC, Hitachi ( HIT ), and Casio Computer discuss combining their mobile-handset operations. In the deal, NEC could take a stake of more than 50 percent in Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications, a joint venture created in 2004. The result would be a cell-phone manufacturer second to Sharp Corp. but still dauntingly competitive. As of the end of March, the three had a combined market share of 20.2 percent in Japan, according to research firm BCN — compared with Sharp’s 21.8 percent share. Filed under: Economy , People , Bank of America In the news for August: Layaway is back , with camera crews and NPR pundits variously highlighting and panning racks full of bags of school supplies, laid away until the next payday or unemployment check. And I am suspicious; is this the answer to America’s credit woes? I doubt it. In fact, it could be just one more bonehead financial move by the American populace. I may only be 35, but I am old enough to have observed an astonishing cycle in American consumer spending habits; one that will certainly be studied by economists and social anthropologists for decades. Though credit cards were invented in 1946 , it was not until 1966 that the card we know today — the general-purpose credit card that could be used nationally — was launched by Bank of America ( BAC ), in a separate brand that would later become Visa. And even that did not become commonly used by the lower-income and middle-class consumers until the 1980s. Before that? There was layaway. Filed under: General Electric , Boeing With Monday afternoon’s news that Scott Carson has been replaced as head of its division that makes the aicraft, why should you care whether Boeing ( BA ) can test its 787 Dreamliner? If you’re a Boeing investor, your net worth could take a nasty hit if the 787 can’t make it to cruising altitude: the 787 accounts for a $154 billion backlog, almost half of Boeing’s total. And if you fly, you’ll want to be sure all the creature comforts I described in You Can’t Order Change don’t come with the risk of falling out of the sky. That’s why the latest information I received from a source who spent two years consulting to Boeing is important. This source contacted an insider at Boeing’s Commercial Aviation Services unit who confirms that Boeing is flying six test aircraft, three of which have no commercial value, since nobody would buy them — which resulted in last week’s $2.5 billion charge. Filed under: Hewlett-Packard , Dell , Intel , Microsoft Fears that the runaway netbook market would siphon off profits from the higher margin laptop market have been overblown. That’s the key takeaway from the latest DisplaySearch numbers on sales of laptops (or notebook) computers versus sales of netbooks. “There is a small amount of cannibalization but a lot of it is people buying secondary devices. They are buying something a little smaller and a little lighter for more basic computing,” says John F. Jacobs, Director of Notebook Market Research for DisplaySearch, a research consultancy focused on technology markets. That’s welcome news to chip giant Intel ( INTC ), which had been beating back fears from Wall Street analysts that the lower-priced Atom processors used in netbooks would cannibalize higher-priced microprocessors used in more powerful laptops. Likewise, laptop titans Dell ( DELL ) and HP ( HPQ ) have been warily watching sales figures for their full-featured and far more expensive laptop lines even as they roll out better and better netbook lines. The fear was so great that consumer electronics giant BestBuy ( BBY ) initially did not even want to sell netbooks, envisioning them as a very hard way to make money. Filed under: People America is already pretty smitten with the First Pooch, but now scientists have a better understanding of what makes Bo Obama so darn cute. The Portuguese Water Dog has variations in three key genes that give the canine and other dogs like him his curly tuxedo coat as well as his “furnishings,” or mustache and large eyebrows. Among the key findings , researchers at the University of Utah discovered that the variant form of a gene called KRT71 determines whether a Portuguese Water Dog will have a wavy or curly coat. “In just looking at his picture, Bo is curly,” says Kevin Chase, a research specialist in biology at the University of Utah. “We don’t actually have his DNA. We do have DNA from [the late Massachusetts Senator] Ted Kennedy’s Portuguese Water Dog. We would be happy to include Bo’s DNA in the future.” Continue reading Study reveals secret to Bo Obama’s good looks Study reveals secret to Bo Obama’s good looks originally appeared on DailyFinance on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 16:00:00 EST.
