Taking an airline flight will usually get you from point A to point B– except when your flight is cancelled. For example, for if you are a business travelor attempting to get from New York to Boston on Delta Airlines Flight 1392, you may want to consider this: According to the Federal Bureau of Transportation, in 2009 the daily 5:30 p.m. flight from New York’s LaGuardia airport to Boston’s Logan… Continue reading Travel Maze: Playing Airline Russian Roulette Travel Maze: Playing Airline Russian Roulette originally appeared on DailyFinance on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 00:48:00. Mort Zuckerman would like to have more say in government. Rupert Murdoch would like to stop losing money on the New York Post. Their problems may have a common solution. Could selling Murdoch the Daily News garner Zuckerman his fellow mogul’s backing for a bid for a U.S. Senate seat? Wall Street vs. Main Street: It almost became a catchphrase last year, as America suffered through the throes of the Great Recession — the $18 billion in bonuses doled out to financial fat cats standing in sharp contrast to the 7 million Americans who had lost their jobs. And those same hurting taxpayers were bailing out the banks that were at the epicenter of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Filed under: People , AT&T , Procter & Gamble Count me among those who do not think highly of people who have extra-marital affairs. The “good news” is that society has a way of making people pay for such transgressions, especially if you are a guy who makes a hefty living hitting little white balls around grassy landscapes. In the case of Tiger Woods, whose middle-of-the-night car accident last week brought to light allegations that the golfer was involved in an affair, the payment is pretty steep. Not only has Woods issued a public apology on his web site, but the The Daily Beast reports that he will pay his wife, Elin Nordegren, $5 million upfront and another $55 million to persuade her to stay in their marriage for another 24 months. Filed under: Company News , Healthcare I’m the first to harangue against chocolate milk marketed as a healthy choice for children. Call me if you want a rant on the terrible health risks associated with modern meat production . Need outrage about deceptively fattening movie theater popcorn ? I’m your woman. I’ve been known to send my children out of the house with a firm reminder never to accept the offer of fast-food hamburgers from strangers, or their own daddy. Hardee’s famous 2/3-pound Monster Thickburger is just the sort of delicacy someone like me might fear: It’s made of two 1/3-pound beef patties, four strips of bacon and three slices of American cheese on a mayonnaise-coated sesame seed bun. It weighs in at 1,420 calories and 43 grams of saturated fat — more than double the daily recommendation for an adult. It’s obscene. But do I think we need to be protected from Hardee’s Monster Thickburger and other foods of its ilk? Continue reading Do ginormous fast-food helpings need warning labels? Filed under: Healthcare , Media , Pfizer The striking union of transit workers in Philadelphia are angry that they’re not getting daily doses of Viagra . And amazingly, their bosses apparently caved on their demands after the union turned down a generous offer — and threatened to embarrass the city during the World Series. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority has agreed to cover almost all of its rising health-care costs, and to increase coverage for Pfizer’s ( PFE ) Viagra and other erectile dysfunction treatments, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. Workers are unhappy that their health insurance plan only covers about 10 pills a month. Continue reading No daily Viagra dose, no peace! Filed under: Economy , Investing As news broke that the U.S. jobless rate crossed the dreaded 10 percent mark, many investors braced for the market’s reaction. The response to word that unemployment reached levels not seen since 1983? The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 17.46 points to 10,023.42 and the S&P 500 ended the day at 1,069.30, up 2.67 points. Not exactly a sell-off. So did news on Friday of 10.2 percent unemployment represent a buying opportunity? For those who follow market trends, it did. Although the labor department said the country in October lost 190,000 jobs — or 15,000 more than expected — active traders in the market keyed in on another unemployment statistic: the monthly revisions of unemployment results. That’s when government statisticians, armed with more complete data, go back and and revise up or down previous months’ unemployment figures. Filed under: Company News , Media , Wal-Mart Stores , Amazon.com, Inc. The howling-wolf T-shirt phenomenon it is not. Walmart Stores ( WMT ) has closed the lid on customer reviews of its caskets. As DailyFinance reported this week, the retailer is selling 15 caskets , and more than 130 urns and cremains containers, through its website. As debatable as that business proposition might be, it proved a sure thing with at least one type of consumer: not the bereaved, but the wags who lurk behind high-speed Internet connections, waiting for an opportunity to heckle retailers with tongue-in-cheek reviews. Q&A: Joy Behar, cable news’ newest host

Filed under: People , Media You might think spending five hours a week taping the daily hen party that is The View would be enough to scratch anyone’s itch to gab. Joy Behar wants more. Starting Tuesday at 9 p.m., the actress/comedian will be hosting her own one-hour nightly talk show on HLN, the CNN sister channel formerly known as Headline News. (HLN is owned by Time Warner ( TWX ), which is also the corporate parent of DailyFinance.) Behar, who often finds herself articulating the liberal position during political discussions on The View, will bring those sympathies to prime time with her, along with a pop-cultural sensibility she hopes viewers will find refreshing. You also might pick up some useful tips: During our interview, Behar shared with me her secret for avoiding telemarketers: “I used to list my number under ‘R. Bozo,’ but they caught me so now I don’t have it listed,” she said. “If you put it under ‘R. Bozo,’ when a telemarketer calls and says ‘Is Mrs. Bozo at home?’ you know you can hang up.” Continue reading Q&A: Joy Behar, cable news’ newest host Q&A: Joy Behar, cable news’ newest host originally appeared on DailyFinance on Mon, 28 Sep 2009 18:30:00 EST.
