By many measures, Webcor Builders is the greenest general contractor of any significant size on the planet. With $3.5 billion in 2009 revenues, Webcor derives 85% of its revenues from LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) projects — the highest percentage of revenue of any large builder. In 2010, Webcor expects to get 99% of its revenue from LEED projects, a stunning statistic for California’s largest builder of hotels, office parks, high rises and other large projects. Filed under: Wal-Mart Stores , Procter & Gamble The dirty little secrets of Glade, Pledge and Windex are all coming clean courtesy of venerable consumer products company SC Johnson. The Racine, Wis. outfit said last week it had launched a new website that lists the ingredients of more than 200 of its products. The WhatsInsideSCJohnson site represents the most significant disclosure to date of the ingredients found in household cleaning products. Lack of disclosure has been a key complaint of green activists who have often alleged that many household cleaners contain toxic ingredients. Equally important, these environmental do-gooders have charged that some supposedly green products contain ingredients that are either unsafe or suspected of having strong health effects on people. As SC Johnson is the first major consumer products company to take this step, its move puts huge pressure on Clorox ( CLX ), Colgate-Palmolive ( CL ) and Procter-Gamble ( PG ) to make similar information available online to consumers. Filed under: Energy , Technology First it was the makers of gas-guzzling autos. Next, the Governator came down hard on coal-fired power plants. Now, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has multinational electronics makers in his executive crosshairs. His mission? To rid the Golden State of big, energy-hogging televisions that suck up so much juice in brown-out prone California. As the Golden State goes, so might go the nation. With what is effectively the eighth-largest economy in the world, California policies can force compliance in consumer electronics manufacturing and drive a green energy agenda like no other state of the union. Shooting grizzly bears in Yellowstone National Park is no longer allowed. Period. A U.S. District Court ruling has required the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service to put the iconic animal back on the Endangered Species Act protected list . The decision earlier this week is a huge victory for environmentalists who had long contended the grizzly was prematurely removed from the list and still faced extinction. While grizzlies were off the list, 37 were shot by people in 2008, the highest shooting mortality rate in decades. Hunting grizzlies is illegal even if they are not endangered. But wildlife advocates believe the removal of the Yellowstone grizzlies more than two years ago encouraged shootings. They also say the lack of endangered species protection resulted in diminished punishments against violators who claimed they shot bears in self defense, including, in some cases, small cubs. Filed under: Company News , Investing The popular “Cash for Clunkers” program, which recently received Congressional approval for another $2 billion in funds, marked a pivotal turning point in the evolution of bailouts: It made politicians realize bailouts are fine, as long as voters get a piece of the pork too . Or, as the saying goes , “I want either less corruption or more opportunity to participate in it.” But Cash for Clunkers has been more than a boondoggle for auto companies and people trading in used cars — it’s been great for insiders, too. In a classic case of intended consequences, Wall Street has helped translate government support for the automobile industry into a nice mid-summer bonus for insiders. Executives at auto dealer AutoNation ( AN ) have used the boost given to the stock price to cash out of their holdings, and that’s another sign it’s too late to be long auto stocks. Filed under: Technology On Monday, the Green Electronics Council announced that the highly acclaimed EPEAT rating system would be covering computer equipment sold around the world, as reported by CNET . That’s a big expansion and an impressive step forward. An EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) rating is mandated as part of RFPs by U.S. government agencies already. This condition effectively forces electronics manufacturers to provide an eco-rating on their products sold in the U.S. Now consumers around the world will be able to better judge the environmental friendliness and impact of their technology gear as the EPEAT ratings are broken down country by country to match products sold under slightly different names or with slightly different configurations around the globe. That’s a great leap forward for the industry and a big help to consumers who want to better understand what sort of toxins they might be bringing into their homes and offices with electronics purchases.
