President Obama’s health-care summit on Thursday was hardly the bipartisan session he had hoped it would be, with Republicans calling for the White House to start over with the entire reform process. Obama said he hoped the event was not become just “political theater” and pleaded with the GOP to confront an issue he described as a catastrophic drag on the American economy. President Obama has proposed a new plan to reform the health care system, but unless the polarized political climate changes dramatically in Washington, there’s little to suggest that Republicans will suddenly support any of Obama’s plans. Insurance company WellPoint, which is opposed to the health care reforms Democrats are promoting, handed them a public relations coup this week: It increased insurance rates on some individual policies by up to 39%. Wellpoint’s profits last quarter? A mere $2.7 billion. Though millions of words have been written about the health care reform that may or may not become law in 2010, very few actually address the health of the American citizenry. Apparently it’s assumed that expanding health care insurance is the same thing as improving the health of the American people. Not true. As I hope to make clear, “improving health” is not the same as “providing health care insurance.” While health care insurance certainly improves access to treatment, it doesn’t necessarily improve the overall health of the American people. Ever since Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s attempt to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day, there has been increased attention given to full-body imaging scanners. While some tout that the machines can prevent such potentially life-threatening incidents from happening again; others have denounced the machines as an infringement on citizen’s right to privacy. Now, concerns are growing that the scanners may actually pose a health risk by exposing passengers to radiation. No doubt, the loss of a Democratic Senator is not the kind of present President Obama wanted for his one-year anniversary. He would have preferred passage of his long-promised goal of health-care reform over this stunning defeat that puts any reform in jeopardy. Now that Republicans have gained filibuster power, can the Democrats still pull this one off? My colleague, Joe Lazzaro, thinks they might do it just yet . Investors, however, seem to have already started to bet against health-care reform. Already on Tuesday, the health-care and pharma sectors climbed higher, a trend that mostly continued on Wednesday. Though there is precious little consensus on fixing the nation’s health care system, most knowledgeable citizens agree that the current system’s skyrocketing costs are unsustainable. The facts are daunting: The U.S. spends 16% of its GDP on health care , 60% more than Germany and other Northern European “socialized medicine” states, and double what Japan devotes to health care. As the health care bill passed another hurdle early Tuesday morning with three more votes in the Senate, Botox maker Allergan Inc. ( AGN ) no doubt breathed yet another sigh of relief. Aiming to pass the bill before Christmas, legislators refrained from taxing elective cosmetic procedures, and instead opted for a tax on tanning salons.
