Google has responded to Apple’s lawsuit against phone maker HTC with support for the maker of its smartphones. While not yet a target of Apple’s litigation, Google is no doubt the intended target in a war that may yet escalate. While Wednesday’s iPad release was exciting, the biggest thrill may have occurred a few minutes later, when thousands of people across America simultaneously had the same thought: “They named it what?” Continue reading With iPad Sounding Like a Feminine Hygiene Product, Will the Jokes Ever Stop? AT&T ( T ) will lose its U.S. exclusive distribution rights for the Apple ( AAPL ) iPhone on Wednesday, according to a report published at tech blog Hot Hardware, which claims to have an inside source. That’s the same day that Apple is holding a special press event at which it is expected to launch its new tablet computer. By contract, AT&T has an exclusive relationship with Apple until later this year, but that wouldn’t prevent Apple from revealing its plans for the iPhone when that exclusive is over. Hot Apple Rumor: AT&T to Lose Its iPhone Exclusive This Week

Let the backlash begin. Nary a week after Google (GOOG) unveiled its new Nexus One smart-phone — billed as the first real challenger to Apple’s ( AAPL ) wildly popular iPhone — complaints about shoddy service and weak developer support have begun pouring in. Customers are complaining about poor connectivity over current, third generation (3G) wireless networks, while developers bemoan the lack of tools for building new applications to run on the phone’s Android 2.1 operating system. Google’s Nexus One Backlash: Shoddy Service

It’s barely been a week since Google (GOOG) launched its own phone and the search giant’s big push into the mobile market has sent ripples throughout the industry. But the immediate outcome of the much-hyped push into what Google sees as a key area of growth, though, can hardly be what the company was hoping for. Google’s ( GOOG ) new Nexus One is being marketed, for the most part, to consumers. The handset shares many features with Apple’s ( AAPL ) iPhone, which itself has made only limited progress at dislodging the enterprise phone champion, Research In Motion’s ( RIMM ) BlackBerry. Insurers Feeling the Urge to Merge in 2010

M&A will likely dominate the insurance and reinsurance market next year, as stronger balance sheets inspire firms to look for growth through acquisitions. Following the September 2008 financial crisis, reinsurers lost around 18% of their capital , but it hasn’t taken long for the carriers to stage a comeback. Now, it’s time to put their money to work. Apple’s ( AAPL ) iconic iPhone was the most popular single mobile device in 2009, but Research in Motion’s ( RIMM ) BlackBerry models and LG’s product line also performed well, according to new data released by Nielsen. In fact, taken together, the various BlackBerry and LG models outsold the iPhone, which comes in just one model. Apple’s iPhone Is 2009’s Most Popular Mobile Phone

But one thing did concern him, and its exactly the thing that Apple ( AAPL ) CEO Steven P. Jobs is counting on: Too many different handsets running Android means trouble in the app store. As the number of wireless handsets running Google’s ( GOOG ) Android operating system continues to climb, analysts and cell phone watchers are growing more bullish on the prospect of the search giant cracking the code for a viable iPhone competitor. One Android model, Motorola’s ( MOT ) Droid , has gotten extremely strong reviews, and other phones, particularly those from Taiwanese device maker HTC, are attracting the attention of gadget hounds. But one key cohort in the mobile phone ecosystem is getting nervous. The iPhone maker launched its ad campaign this week showing an iPhone user talking on the phone while surfing the Web as a voice asks, “Can your phone and your network do that?” It’s Apple’s comeback to Verizon’s latest attack on the iPhone which runs on AT&T’s wireless networks.
